Mistake #1 – Poorly written and disorganized product information

One of the worst mistakes you could ever commit in ecommerce web design is not putting detailed and well-written information regarding the items in your inventory. Although content has little to do with design, this plays a vital role in your SEO campaign: without the content, what is there to optimize? 

Each product must have its very own description – don't copy it from the manufacturer. Get creative while instilling the concepts of SEO and practicality in mind. Make your writing clear and concise, in order to make your users understand it. 

Lastly, quality content would be useless without organization – every piece of content has to be arranged in a tidy and organized manner in order to be readable. Remember, once the product descriptions can be easily read, it is already aesthetically pleasing. Use the white space effectively.

Mistake #2 – Invisible contact information

The number one concern of e-commerce website customers is the legitimacy of the website they are transacting with, along with its security. In order to assure your customers that you are a legit business or company, simply include your business' contact details, emergency hotlines, e-mail address or anything that can be used to contact you. Place it on every page, and dedicate a single link on your navigation bar for it. When this piece of information is hidden, it is less likely that your visitors will transact with you. 

Mistake #3 – Not going straight to business

You have to keep in mind that the main reason why your visitors went into the website in the first place is to check your products and see if they're all worth buying. In this case, make sure that your landing page tells your users exactly that. If you provide cookies, then put up a group of text on your homepage that says: 

“WE SELL COOKIES”. Even before your visitors search a certain product, you should convince them why they should do business with you and not your competitors. If you fail to do any of the any above mentioned, then you're likely to confuse your users and be met with a closed tab. 

Mistake #4 – Failure to go responsive

Responsive web design is no longer a trend, but a revolution. It changed the way websites are being viewed – it is compatible to both desktop and mobile devices. Not resorting to responsive designs is not only foolish, but suicidal: it will definitely affect your sales because of the inconvenience you have imposed on mobile users. Bear in mind that mobile devices have now taken the lion's share of Internet user numbers!
